Peter Jackson was born in New Zealand in 1961. He is a film director, producer, actor and screenwriter. He is best known for his work on the Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001-2003) which earned him multiple Academy Awards. He is also known for his work in King Kong (2005) and District 9 (2009).

Throughout his career, now spanning more than 30 years, Peter Jackson have become known for his trademarks which include his attention to detail, and the habit of shooting scenes from many different angles. His earlier films displayed a grisly sense of humour and a general playfulness. His quest for perfect has made him renowned within the New Zealand film industry often shooting a scene from as many different angles as possible hence giving him more options during editing. This habit has also led him to spend days shooting a single scene. With scenes featuring simple dialogue, he would often use a range of camera angles and shot sizes as well as close-ups of faces to capture expressions.

For most of his career, Jackson has remained in his home country of New Zealand to make films. He was appointed a Companion in the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2002 and has won three Academy Awards including the award for Best Director for The Return of the King.

Toy Story is a computer animated movie made in 1995 and directed by John Lasseter. It is about what toys get up to when people are not around. Woody the cowboy, is Andy’s favourite toy but when Buzz Lightyear, a space ranger, becomes Andy’s new favourite toy, Woody becomes jealous and the two toys develop a not so friendly relationship. Woody plots to get rid of Buzz by a variety of means but in the end only finds himself lost in the real world with only Buzz as company. The two must then work together to find their way home and on the way forge a genuine friendship and learn that only through trust, and cooperation do they have a chance of survival.

Toy Story was the first completely computer generated animated movie. Storyboards were initially used to assist animators create the characters. Once created, each character was made out of clay before reaching the computer. 400 computer models were then used to animate the characters. Software programs were coded to create articulation and motion. Additional touches such as lighting and shading and other visual effects were added last in the animation process. During post production, sound and music were added.

It was a big hit both with adults and children. The younger audience loved it for its vibrant colours, lovable characters and clever and adventurous storyline. The more mature audience appreciated the movie for its heartfelt messages and the amazing graphics which brought the characters to life. Overall, the movie was a universal success and to this day is still a much loved classic.

James Francis Cameron (born August 16, 1954) is a Canadian film director, producer, screenwriter, editor, and inventor. His writing and directing work includes The Terminator (1984), Aliens (1986), The Abyss (1989), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), True Lies (1994), Titanic (1997), and Avatar (2009). Described by a biographer as part-scientist and part-artist, Cameron has also contributed to underwater filming and remote vehicle technologies.

Today, the record that the 13-year history of the world’s total box office has kept by Titanic is broken by the movie Avatar with 1.859 billion U.S. dollars. He realized the self-transcendence easily. He became “The king of the world” once again. Cameron's Titanic and Avatar are the two highest-grossing films of all time.

For Film counterparts, he is a director who is one of the most “burning money” and most “making money” in Hollywood. He was described as a tyrant. For fans, there is only one in the world. That is a great hero Cameron, a great genius Cameron, unmatched and omnipotent director, James Cameron.

one of my favourite directors-Kenny Ortega

One of my favourite directors is Kenny Ortega. Acturaaly, i do not know so much directors caz i just foucus on the films on the past :P. After I learn this subject, I starts to focus on the director, characters and the shots of the film~! What a big change!!? lol~

Kenny Ortega is an American producer, director, and choregrapher! I know him from my one of favourite movies "High School Musical".

I think Kenny is a superb director. He not only shot this amazing film but also help to creat the dance for the film. He know what his audiences need and always bring the new fresh feeling to us!

He make a good balance with the music and the plot of "High School Mucial", it doesn't bring to much heavy emotion for the movie but showing the enthusiasm of the characters. And it makes a same feeling to the audiences.

In 2008 Ortega was honored as one of the most powerful and influential Hispanics in entertainment by the Imagen Foundation. [1 ]

Besides, Kenny Ortega also directed the concert film Michael Jackson's This Is It which was put together from rehearsal footage recorded at the Los Angeles Forum and the Staples Center. The film was released on October 28.[2]

He is so cool! XP

Film Analysis

The Film "Lost in Translation", Written & Directed by Sofia Coppola was shown in theatres in Australia on the 26th December 2003 with a Running time of 102 minutes & with the Tagline "Everyone wants to be found".

The Plot Centres around two characters, A movie star named Bob Harris with a sense of emptiness portrayed by Bill Murray, A neglected newlywed named Charlotte who is trying to find her place in the world portrayed by Scarlett Johansson, Two strangers meet in Tokyo Japan and slowly form an unlikely bond, Both characters are in Japan and do not speak the language fortunately for them friendship needs no translation.

During the course of the film we see two major characters Bob Harris & Charlotte they both interact with each other in the movie and have individual scenes separately, The differences and similarities between the two characters and how they interact with each other is what makes the film interesting.

"Lost in Translation" is a really interesting film to watch as we learn more about both individual characters how they deal with being Alienated in a foreign country, the audience watches as their friendship grows, the story moves away from the theme of loneliness towards companionship and back towards loneliness in the emotional farewell we witness at the end of the film.

The characters:

Bob Harris (Bill Murray): A movie star, Paid $2,000,000 to endorse a brand of whisky called Suntory (as seen in the image below), currently shooting ads and taking photo shoots on set in Tokyo Japan, Occasionally calls his wife to check up on his family during the course of the movie and he has stated that he has been married for awhile. Charlotte notes that she thinks he is experiencing a mid life crisis.

Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson): A neglected newlywed that followed her husband to Tokyo Japan who is actually a photographer, Intellectual & smart Charlotte throughout the course of the movie can be seen to do a lot of soul searching as she is trying to find her place in the world & in life.

Theme(s)

Several themes are covered in the film "Lost in translation", Such as Alienation, Loneliness, Companionship and coming to adjust with culture differences or shocks against the setting of modern Tokyo Japan.

The Theme of Alienation is set early on in the movie when it is clearly established that neither Bob or Charlotte can speak Japanese despite being in Japan, Charlotte admits to a friend of hers through a phone call that she is having problems adjusting , Bob Harris is shown that he has no proficiency in Japanese as a translator is required for his filming on the "Suntory" ad that he is apparently being paid $2,000,000 to endorse.

A Visual symbol of Alienation can be seen when Bob is seen standing in the elevator with other residents of Japan, Notice how he is the tallest man there he stands out (not that it's a bad thing). We can see Bob Harris and the other people in the elevator thanks to the use of a MS (Mid Shot), The use of a Medium Shot here shows some of Bob but more of his surroundings but he remains in the centre this allows us to see the environment around him yet giving us the impression of "Bob" as the Whole Subject.

This scene of Bob when first viewed gives the audience a bit of humour but still makes its point that Bob is "Different", We can identify this by his height difference, he is also dressed a bit less formally as we can see he isn't wearing a tie like the other people in the elevator and the way he is standing giving off a different presence.

Another example can be seen by Charlotte how she is seen in the image above gazing down on the city notice her expression it's not exactly a cheerful one (I would love to live in Japan sadly). We can see both Charlotte and Tokyo's landscape thanks to a MCU (Medium Close Up). The use of a MCU here combines elements of a MS (Mid Shot) & CU (Close Up), which gives us the impression of Charlotte in more detail and her upper body takes up the whole frame so we can see her expression more easily.

The Image above is of Charlotte again but this time in a MS (Mid Shot) this shows us charlotte in more detail in a familiar position gazing down at Tokyo Japan, But this time at night since its darker the use of lighting is used more notice how she is dressed the city is getting darker and she is still wearing opposing colours to contrast herself from the dark city with a white solid top, The lighting is focusing more on her head & face suggesting that she is thinking once again. The lighting gives us a good look at her expression, The expression itself is very similar to the image above this one.

The shots with Charlotte however at the current point in the film we identify that she is "Alone" and trying to find her "place" in the world. The background is in direct contrast with her clothing not in style but in the general sense of colour she is wearing something bright which we can see in the foreground however the city behind her in the background has a darker and grim colour scheme. Her general stance and expression tells us she is gazing outwardly yet thinking inwardly deeply as she seems focused on something.

The background behind her is a busy city while Charlotte herself is frozen in a sense that a busy moving city & a girl staying motionless locked in deep thought contrast each other.

Lighting plays a more obvious role helping the audience identify her expression by making it much more visible in the second image of Charlotte.

In all three of the images above we can tell that Bob Harris & Charlotte have something in common they are both "Alone" in a sense.

The Final Farewell

The final scene in the movie begins with Bob Harris leaving Japan and making his way home to his family he is being escorted outside of the hotel by the staff, a few things happen during this finale a fan is star struck to be seeing Bob Harris at the hotel, Bob while initially fond to meet a fan has something else on his mind. That something else is his friend Charlotte and the thoughts of why she isn't down stairs to say goodbye to him.

The Finale progresses and Bob Harris is being driven to the airport he spots Charlotte and asks his driver to stop the car for him as he will be right back shortly.

Bob makes his way towards Charlotte and turns her around (seen in the image below) they establish eye contact the shot used in the image is called a Two-shot. The "Two-shot" framed almost exactly like a mid shot but with two people, through the use of a "Two-shot" we can establish that both the main characters are on screen and neither one is more important than the other.

The shot above has both Bob Harris & Charlotte as stated above they establish eye contact, This is the final time the audience will see both Bob Harris & Charlotte together as they begin to exchange words they are both greatly happy to see each other one last time and both sad as this is a "farewell" to a friend from each characters perspective.

Initially the two main characters who were strangers to each other, Both characters trying to deal with being in a foreign country become friends, Two alienated individuals living in a foreign country find peace in each other's company establishing the theme companionship and move away from the theme of loneliness only to move back into loneliness in the end however in the end both characters in a sense "Grow", the audience is treated to a emotional farewell in the finale.

In the image above Bob Harris hugs / holds Charlotte a CU (close up) is used in this frame Charlottes eyes are exposed into greater detail for the audience to see. In this scene Bob Harris whispers something that the audience cannot hear despite having a very close "visual" but a almost silent "audio" what bob says to Charlotte cannot be heard clearly.

This leaves the audience wondering what Bob Harris said to Charlotte as the audience can not hear it clearly from this point it is up to the Audience to interpret what Bob said to her. We do however get to see that Charlottes eyes slowly turn red and watery so it must have been something personal the audience is given that much information at least.

The audience has witnessed two complete strangers with their own different and similar problems come together and become friends and find peace in each other's company taking their mind off the feeling of "Alienation" of being in Japan. Both characters eventually grow and learn how to deal & coupe with their respective problems of loneliness just from being with each other . Both characters developed throughout the story and course of the film but at the end of the movie the characters go their separate ways as Bob Harris has to leave and Charlotte is stuck in Tokyo Japan for a little while longer.

we started off with the theme of loneliness moved onto the theme of companionship and at the end we go back to loneliness as the two characters go their separate ways.

The writer & director Sophia Coppola is truly talented being able compose such a story and being able to transfer the same story from text to video.

Thank you for reading my first film Analysis I hope it wasn't too bad but I'm not feeling very confident about it! haha take care of yourself guys hope to see you around the campus of AIT =).

Film Analysis
The Virgin Suicides
Sofia Coppola

The Virgin Suicides comes from a novel by American writer Jeffrey Eugenides. Sofia Coppola wrote the screenplay and directed this filmed in 1999. The story sets in Grosse Pointe, Michigan during the 1970s, centers around the suicides of five sisters. This film also expressed the family feelings contradiction in deep danger with black comedy special form.

This film gets high rank of praise. But what made this movie important? This is because the film is realistic and thought-provoking. It is not only a film, but also a lecture to show the audiences information and give them question to think about. In this film, the youth issue, family issue, even the social issue, all of them is reflected incisively and vividly. It is realistic, but unlike the newspaper or the report, what the audiences see is the drama, instead of the straightforward language and the stark reality without any color.

The word “virgin” means a female who has never had sexual experience. From the Angle of biology, virgin originally meant a female’s maidenhead is still intact. Anyway, the word “virgin” is always the sign of the purity. It is always full of the sex fantasy and thoughts thronging in people’s mind. Compare with “virgin”, the word “suicide” is the intentional killing of oneself. So, only “death”, “terrorist” and “bloody” this kind of negative words can be connected with it. In general speaking, the word “suicide” itself is the incarnation of the evil. As it takes one’s life and leaves the fear and despair to the other people who are still alive in the world. The sharp contrast between these two words increases the mystery of this film. It catches the audiences’ attention. And then, the story starts.

The old scenes, slightly yellowish photos and a vigorous male’s voice bring the audiences back to the year that the story happened. The whole story begins with Cecilia, the youngest sister’s suicide. Some unharmonious sound is mixed in the light music and it becomes louder, until it is loud enough to make sure everyone can hear it. It is the ambulance. The close up shot shows a lovely but lifeless face. It suddenly brings audiences a heavy visual impact and makes the whole movie in a silent panic; make the person feels heavy at the beginning. Along with the development of drama, the audiences will feel heavier and heavier, until the heavy straight overwhelmed. At this time, the audiences should realize that neither the “virgin” nor the “suicide” is the key of the film, but something over or not mentioned in this film will be the real key that should be attention.

Cecilia’s face when she suicides in bathroom, lifeless face.

In this movie, everything starts from boys’ subjective visual. The Lisbon girls are mysterious; all of them are full of rich colors. In their eyes, they never really understood that what happened in that little room, the tiny heart exactly what holds. For Cecilia’s suicide, nobody knows why this girl wants to kill herself, even her parents. So, different people have different guess. Maybe the neighborhoods are right, she just wants to leave, be away from the strict education, the autocratic control. Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon are afraid, and they try to find out the problems. So, they send Cecilia to see the Psychological doctor. “You are not old enough to understand how terrible the life is.” “You've never been a 13-year-old girl.” Cecilia’s shot and mature answer, it can be said, it opens the prelude for the girls’ suicide. After that, Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon obey the experts’ suggestion, hold the party for Cecilia. However, they do not reconsider their education radically. Cecilia’s suicide shook all the neighborhoods and made her family into a state of the damaged beyond repair. More importantly, for her sisters, she already sets a model for imitation; finally, all of them kill themselves as well. Just like the plague, spreading in everywhere of that mysterious house which they cannot get into.

Cecilia’s suicide

When they gradually recovered from Cecilia’s death, Trip comes into Lux’s life and leads to the waves in the traditional conservative family. Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon let Trip come to their place to watch TV with them because of Cecilia’s death and the doctor said that the Lisbon girls should contact with boys. They allow the Lisbon girls to go out to join the dancing party as they do not want the tragedy happened again, they do not want to lose daughters any more. However, Lux misses the curfew time. In the next day, Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon see her trancelike face. They realize that something really bad and what they are afraid happened. Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon are very devout Christians; they cannot tolerate the premarital sexual behavior. But Lux, the devout Christians’ daughter, just breaking the taboo. Through the extremely long shot, the parents’ anger and worry are obvious. As a result, Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon lock girls in the house; they use the extreme way to protect them.

One thing should be mentioned here, that is in other countries, the title of this movie also translated as The locked youth. It means that Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon can lock the girls at home in order to protect them. However, they are unable to lock their mind, youth and dreams. Now, I’d like to explain that neither the “virgin” nor the “suicide” is the theme. The real leader of the film is just a kind of relationship between children and parents. Something over or not mentioned in this film can be defined as the sharp contradiction in a family. It is not only the family problem, but also up to the social issue level. This kind of feature is also one of the reasons for the success of this film. After seeing this film, quite a lot of audiences, especially the parents say that they learn something from it and they also begin to think about the way that they educate their children.

With Cecilia’s death, this point also secretly revealed the other Lisbon girls’ death in the end of this film. They just want to leave, leave the boring even suffocating environment. They want to go outside, go back to school, go to see the world outside, go to those places that they really want to go. However, they are under their parents’ control. Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon control their daughters as they love them and they should protect them so that they can avoid being hurt. But to those young girls, who desire for freedom, they just over-protected and this kind of love is too heavy to carry. Finally, they choose to end their young life to release their youth and escape from the world.

Lux’s suicide, only one hand is hanging out.

Many times, suicide has a clear and fully reason. For example, the businessman suicides because of the financial crisis; a lady suicides maybe she just break up with her boyfriend. But in this film, most of the audience will find that it is hard to find out an exact reason for the Lisbon girls to suicide. Maybe, just don't ask why. The people have to find a reason. Life itself do not need a reason, it is not a rational design in accordance with meticulous design good programs. We do not encourage death and suicide. This is because neither suicide nor death would solve problems. It never goes beyond our understanding, so vivid, so inconceivable, shows the beautiful and splendid was the cruel. But this is the life and death, containing various kinds of death. In this film, religious beliefs, boring and strict environment, closing and smothering survival environment, besides this, there are no more better choice for those young girls. They died; maybe their young soul will achieve their wishes. The strict education can lock their body and thought, but their souls are free. They can go anywhere they want.

Lux’s smile face, perhaps the girls really happy in the other world now.

This film is only 97-minute-long, and it was filmed in 1999. However, it already covers lots of social problems existed in that time, even in today’s society. The time keeps going, the society is developing, with this kind of development, people’s thought is in progress as well. But everything has two sides; the disadvantages also follow the advantages. At this time, the teenagers’ thoughts are also gradually forming. They begin to wish the freedom. They want to do something they really want to do. They even do not want to follow parents’ mind. The only reason for this kind of behavior can be defined as one word, the “youth”.

Back to the film, the narrative voice seems to be the eye of God. However, when a boy’s voice appears. It is clear, the story is told by first-person. This is because he is one of the parties in that event. At the beginning of the film, there are four boys looking at the five beautiful Lisbon girls. Who is the person telling the story? This is the question that confused the audiences. Is the boy with brown hair or the guy with golden hair? Maybe, he is the quiet one. The youngest boy may be the teller as well. From the sub-title, it is clear that this story happened in 25 years ago. That is quite a long time. It is so long that the teller is not able to be proven. What the audiences know is just that the teller must be one of the boys who really love the girls. Even 25 years past, he still remembers them.

The way used to tell the story is flash back. It looks like the linear narrative structure, but actually, it is not exact enough as in the middle of the film. The teller already goes out of the story and there is just a middle-aged man appears in front of the audiences, instead of the young boy. The teller is old; he is no longer a young boy in the story. No one can make sure who he is. So, the most suitable way to describe the narrative structure is flash forwards. This is because everything happened in the story follows the time line. In general speaking, all of the events happened day by day and all of them are continuous. Something that connects the events is the time span. For example, after Cecilia’s first suicide, Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon already decide to give their daughters a normal social environment, they allow the boys to join the party, even allow the four girls to go outside to dance with boys. But at last, they deprive all of the rights that they used to give the girls. Such huge contrast may let the audience feel isolated. But actually, for Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon’s behavior, what the audiences really feel is just extreme, cold, and even cruel. As between the two events, what happened to Lux is already told the audiences the reasons that Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon would do something. This is because the inevitable connection between the two events. The girls’ boring life in the house is also buried a small house for their suicides. Time flies, one day, it takes the Lisbon girls’ lives, as time already takes their wish. They are hopeless. Maybe, they can get freedom in the other world. No matter youth or life, everything will be taken by time.

In fact, the most successful part of the film is the atmosphere creating by the director, Sofia Coppola. The difference of other same type of films, this is a warm opening in this film. But with Cecilia’s suicide, the gloom and blurred always float in the air. It does not dissipate in the whole film. Although it has a bright warm color, but actually, it gives the feeling really heavy and shudder. And it plus Air’s music, this feeling is more apparent. The film ended with the music (Playground Love), girls’ souls may be getting the freedom, but audiences are not so easy to escape.

The beginning of the film with Air’s music.

And the end of the film, people get together in a party. From the suits, we can see that the boys are growing up. They are not the childish guys look at the Lisbon girls’ life by the telescope and dream that they can take them out of the house and release their youth with the girls who they used to love.

It is not describing the conflicts between justice and evil, but about how to survive in the society which is composed with kindness and viciousness. Learning human’s love, using the potential wise of her own, Chihiro finally go back to the human’s society. It’s not because of she defeat the evil or something, but she dug up her potential power of life. Nowadays, Japanese society is becoming more and more ambiguous, kindness and viciousness are mixed together, hard to distinguish them. Using the characters in animation world to describe the reasons and powers in life, that is what I considered when I made the film.”By Hayao Miyazaki.

Spirited Away is animated by Hayao Miyazaki, in December 2001. Hayao Miyazaki is a famous animation director in Japan, he not only direct his animation, but also write the script, draw the scenes.

To introduce Miyazaki, we have to look into the history of Japanese manga first. Japanese manga is developed from American and European comic, it slowly has its own style as it develops. When Disney is focusing on high technology of computer generated, Japanese manga is going a way to develop their skill of hand drawing. Since Osamu Tezuka, they begin to put camera techniques of movies into manga, using shots like bird-eye view, wide angle, etc. Osamu Tezuka is a giant in Japanese manga history, for many years, no one can walk out of his shadow.

But Miyazaki did it. He exceeded Osamu Tezuka, because he is showing something different. As he said, his stories are not about fighting with weapons or magical power, although he is telling fantastic stories, he focuses on the real world.

Many of Miyazaki’s films are described as “fairy tales for adults”. They are telling stories happening in a strange world, on some nonexistent stages, but they make people think deeply about society and life. In Spirited Away, he is telling a story that a girl called Chihiro who lost in a strange world, how she find the way to go home. But in this story, many characters have their deep meaning, they are representing something, so as the plot.

In Spirited Away, the main conflict is certainly between individual person and the ambiguous society, or the viciousness in the society.

The story itself was about Chihiro and her parents enter a strange place in a sudden. Her parents were careless and greedy, they were not care about the host was there or not, just sat down and ate the food. The father said, he has cash and credit card, so it would be all right. In adults’ opinions, money is everything, can solve any problem. They think they can be so rude, because they have money. But money does not work always. They became pigs by the power of magic. Now, Chihiro must survive by herself, and find the way to survive her parents.

Then, Chihiro met many people ( or monsters ) and many things. We can see she is developing when going through this. In some plot, we can see these changes.

At first, Chihiro lied in the car lazily, had no curious on the new place where they were going to live in. She was worried about some little things, such as the first time receiving flowers is for the reason of leaving old friends, such as the flowers are getting withered in her hands. When they stopped at the big gate, her parents were going to get in, but she was feared. Parents told her to stay in the car to wait for them come back, but she was afraid of the smiling stone statue outside the gate, does not want to stay alone with the statue. When they walked in the gate way, Chihiro held her mother’s arm tightly. All these show that she was a young, weak, timid girl. She was depend on her parents so much. Her parents decided everything for her, even she was not happy about their decision, but she could not affect her parents’ opinion at all. We can see, she was not happy with moving to the new place, she was afraid to go into the gate, but her parents just did whatever they want. And, as Chihiro was depending on them so much, she could not ignore what her parents do and go her own way.

After that, her parents became pigs, she had to do everything herself. Although She met some people that helped her a lot, they were not helping her in the way that do everything for her. She need to face the problems herself.

This stage is like a young girl first get into the society, get away from the protection of parents, facing the society. As Miyazaki says, the society is mixed with kindness and viciousness. This kind of experience, just as many young people go through when they begin to survive with their own power.

We can see Chihiro was learning a lot. When the problem comes, Chihiro was trying to run away at first. She saw the world become strange at night, then tell herself “ it is a dream, it will disappear”. She cried, she begged the boy called Haku to stay with her, because she was afraid. Haku told her to go to the old man who has many hands. That time, she always put her hands in front of her breast, easy to be scared by any little things. When she talked to the old man, her voice was like shy. Rin said she was impolite, because she didn’t say thank you to the old man.

At this stage, Chihiro begin to struggle on her own, but she does not have strong spirit yet, and does not know how to communicate with people in a right way, seems impolite. She still try to rely on others, we can see this from some of her actions, such as asking Haku to stay with her, following Rin carefully.

And then, Chihiro grew up more. She faced Yubaba on her own, insist to ask for a job. She was getting braver. She was scared by the strange guest that looks like a kind of vegetable, but she still bow to him to say good bye when the lift reached the top level. Haku told her to go out and meet him at the bridge, she went out and passed the place of the old man, those black guys took out her shoes, she said “thank you” to them. Obviously, she was getting more polite.

Haku met her at the bridge, and brought her to her parents, gave her encouragement, and told her to remember her real name.

As the strange world is representing the ambiguous society, we can considered the “name” here also has special meaning. Yubaba controls people by taking away their names. Yubaba is like the viciousness in the society, when people have request from it, they will lost themselves. If people want to succeed, they must remember who they are, all they will get lost in the society and forgot the way home, control by the vicious forces forever.

From beginning to the end, the story is always focusing on Chihiro’s developing. Other characters, although they have their own meaning, but mostly are explaining the changes of Chihiro, or being a contrast as a opposite side to Chihiro.

For example, Haku is always helping Chihiro. With his help, Chihiro find her own name. Rin taught her to be polite, the old man taught her not to give up once she start doing something ( When Chihiro picked up the coal, she asked “What should I do with this? Put it on the ground?” The old man said, ” As you start, finish it to the end ” ). They help Chihiro to keep going, and also teach her a lot. That is why we can see Chihiro can solve so many problems, and learned so much.

On the other hand, the black man with a mask, is representing another kind of young people. He is lonely, desired for love. As Chihiro is friendly to him, even it is only opening the door for him in a rainy day. He is sensitive to Chihiro’s kindness, but also easy to be effect by the viciousness. What he learned is opposite from Chihiro, he learned all the bad things. But, as his motive was coming from his favorable impression to Chihiro, he is finally effected by Chihiro and become a kind person again.

In another aspect, we can also see Chihiro is the center of this story. From the cinematography. Miyazaki usually shows a long shot to tell us what is the situation, then a close up to focus on the reaction of Chihiro. It makes audience go with the story as a way “What’s going on? What will chihiro do?”keep asking these question in mind as a circle.

For example, when Chihiro went to the bridge to meet Haku, she saw that black man on the bridge. After crossing the bridge, the man disappeared. To show this little plot, Miyazaki first give us a long shot to show Chihiro was facing the bridge, and the man is standing on the bridge. Chihiro was running, but stopped at that time, then a medium shot to Chihiro, she was blinking and looks confused. Audiences would think, something has grabbed her attention, she is looking at something, what is that? Then a long shot to the black man, just as answering the question, she is looking at this. Then, Chihiro walk through the bridge. Normally, if he want to show the characters movement, using tracking would be good. But he didn’t. Still a long shot, the camera is still. Here, the black man is the situation, is about” What is going on”. To make the camera still, is actually showing the relationship between the “situation” and Chihiro.
