Lost in translation shot at 29th of September 2002 to 8th of November 2002. It showed to the public in 2003. IT is talking about a story of a Hollywood star named Bob Harris and a young lady named Charlotte they meet each other in Tokyo which the capital in Japan. They feel lonely and insomnia so they go to bar which is in the hotel and meet each other. They go out side with Japanese friends to sing songs in KTV. The feel lucky to meet each other and they almost fall in love but they have their matrimony. They spend days to each other to make the live in Tokyo not difficult to endure. They drink and talk in the bar and go out have fun. When Harris finish his work and go back they say goodbye in the lobby of hotel. He gets on the car and sees Charlotte in the street. He can’t control himself to ask driver stop and get off the car to pursue Charlotte. When he pursues Charlotte the cuddle and kisses each other. Then Harris goes back to the car and leave.

Sofia Coppola is the director and scrip writer of the film. She comes from very famous movie family. Her father, Francis Ford Coppola is very famous director in the world. Her cousin, Nicolas Cage (Nicholas Kim Coppola) is a movie king and very famous Hollywood actor. Sofia Coppola is a actress too. Her last film is Inside Monkey Zetterland on 1992 then she realize she should be become a director like her father and she study in California Institute of the Arts. She just used three movies to let everybody know her; there are The Virgin Suicide, Lost in translation and Marie Antoinette. Her movie has inwardness make the spectators have sympathy for the story. So this is the reason why Sofia Coppola’s movies had successed. She famous for describe the cerebration of female, she write the scrip very fine and smooth and easily to understand what she want to express in each movie. Her movies make most of female has response. Her movie has fascination to make people who watch her movie so strong echo. This is the reason Sofia Coppola has became a famous movie director.

Bill Murray, the main actor in the movie, he acted Bob Harris. Harris is a middle age and famous Hollywood star. He came to Japan to make a adverting of alcohol. In the movie Bill perform the funny part of movie and melancholy of the character from his family. Harris was shooting his advertising; the camera had zoomed into close his face. When the director was telling him how to act the advertising, he shows his face confusing. And the interpreter translated for him is too short and he knows she didn’t tell him all information. So he look depressed and follow what she said. In this shot is having not any music and sound. Because when their shot an advertising or movie they have to keep quiet to make sure all the sound from the character.

This shot is a medium shot; spectator can see the interpreter’s face and Harris’s face. It show us the language problem exist everywhere whether if you are in school or working. This interpreter show off some person in our real life is doing the same thing.

Scarlett Johansson, other main actress in the movie. She is a very young actress in America who is only eighteen years old when she shot the movie. Charlotte a lady who just married for two years and graduated from university without any job. Her husband is a photographer and does very busy job in Tokyo. It tells us a story from a young girl’s live change into helpless and lonely. This scene is describing Charlotte insomnia in night and she sit on the stage of window, looking the night view. She turns to look her husband who has nice sleep. The color looks very dark and show us the lonely feeling around Charlotte.

This one is in daytime, it also tells us Charlotte always feel lonely no matter her in day or night, her husband stay or not. She starts thinking what is she want in her matrimony and she doesn’t know what the man she was married is. This problem also in many person’s life, it could be the reason of divorce now. The camera used top shot in this sense.

Charlotte went outside by herself, in here, they use a long short to make Charlotte look lonely, with the sound. She is in a strange environment; the people around her are speaking different language she didn’t understand. She feels a little bit scared but she still keeps going.

When she came back to hotel she still feel vast and hazy, she need to talk to her friend for help. She cried and makes her voice free and easy when she was talking. But her friend didn’t help her at all, because of the busy life. In here, the camera used eye-level shot to make it look some one looking at her. Like our life, someone usually looking what you do, and you maybe care how they see you.

The characters met in the bar. The same reason and different problem in their life let them feel sad and regret having not met earlier. During the time they didn’t talk to much of them disturb but they know her or him has similar problem. With the background music which is sing from the singer in the bar, the feel the life is full of involuntarily.

They went to have fun in night, pub, game shop, KTV. They enjoy dancing, running on the street and singing songs. In the end of that that, the tired and lonely feeling has came again. But this time they stay with each other and they almost get lost in Tokyo with the translation. In this shoot, they used rock music and became silent, it like our life no matter how lively you have, it will be turn to silent. You have to face some time by yourself.

The story going fast and in this part is the climax of the movie. When Charlotte found Harris have a night with other women she realizes they different and they couldn’t keep going like before. Maybe she has a little like Harris and she want to stop the emotion. Harris likes her too. But they know they can’t because they have their own family even they have no more tension on it. The color turn to yellowish and dark with no one talking and the sound of hot pot, flavour is awkward.

This shot is almost in the end, Harris found Charlotte on the street after they farewell in the lobby. He cuddles and kisses Charlotte. Then he tells her something near her ear but we hear nothing. This setting is let the viewer to guess what he say and from the happiness smile on her face, we should guess maybe he told her his contact details or maybe he said he love her actually or just say good. They all know they are very hard to see each other in the future. When Harris go back to the car which is waiting for him, Charlotte smile and walk into the crowd. The scense turn to all blurring. The last minutes, the sense show us Harris sit in the car and look at the view of Tokyo last time, the camera Dolly the car outside, and turn to the highway. This scene focus on Harris’ face and Charlotte’s head, background is blurring. This effect to make everyone to focus the characters to point out roles.

Lost in translation just shoot 27 days how amazing for this figure. They don’t have enough time for shooting, so they shat the movie as quick as possible, quality of the movie also wonderful. The result of the movie is successful; it doesn’t show us hurry and weak. They take a risk because shooting Tokyo subway station and shibuya crossroad is illegal in Japan. So many shots are shooting stealthily. Sofia Coppola just brings about 8 American staff to Japan, others staffs were invited in Tokyo. Because of the language problem, it made shot the movie more difficult. And the environments were hard at that time. Bar and pub in hotel which they characters live in is very dark, the cameraman has very strong skill to make is look so good. The colour is difference to black & white movie and the movie at present. It shows lively and comfortable, when you watch the movie you can feel you are in it. Light like so soft on day time, but it look lonely and distance in night time. The movie has medium shot, long shot, close up. Camera has top side, eye-level. Movement has be used in the movie are panning, tracking, zoom in, zoom out and Dolly.
